Camden, New South Wales

The township of Camden, located 60km South West of Sydney is bound on the north and east by the Nepean River and to the west by the steep hills of Razorback.
The Nepean River adds to the charm and relaxed atmosphere of the town, and together with its flood plains provides a natural barrier to separate Camden from the metropolitan urban sprawl.

The people of Camden are renowned for their warm hospitality and friendly smiles.

Camden benefits from maintaining a relaxed, easy going rural lifestyle, while maintaining convenient access to modern day services. It is truly;

' The Best of Both Worlds '

Historic Camden

Camden was named after Lord Camden, following his original land grant to John Macarthur in 1805. The town of Camden then went on to play a significant role in the birth of the Australian wool, wheat and wine industries.

It was adjacent to the river that the cows and bulls, landed by Governor Phillip on the first fleet in 1788 were eventually discovered. They had strayed some years earlier from the Sydney Cove settlement and were found grazing, having significantly increased in numbers. From then on the area became known as the 'Cowpastures'.

Camden's contribution to the nation's heritage is evidenced in some 33 buildings listed on the Heritage register and its historic treasures range from early farm buildings and homesteads to magnificent 19th century stately homes and manors.

Council of Camden

The Council of Camden established in February 1889, provides many services and facilities for the Local Government Area of Camden, including the Camden Civic Centre.

They also maintain Camden's premier garden, Macarthur Park. Located on the hill across the road from St John's , the garden is a favourite for wedding photo's or picnic lunches.

The Council's Camden office operates out of 'Macaria' which was built in the middle of the 19th century. The council is a good source of information and are keen to promote community events.
