SPEAKER: LINDA SMITH BA (Hons) MA – NADFAS
Linda is an art historian with a broad range of knowledge and a special interest in British art, and the art of the twentieth century. She delivers illustrated talks, presentations and study days on a variety of art history topics and has taken on various types of assignment at a wide range of venues, including cruise liners, public galleries, secondary schools, and private art societies in the UK and overseas. She is an accredited NADFAS lecturer and an experienced gallery guide, especially at the Tate Britain and Tate Modern in London, where she works as a Guide and Lecturer.

Lecture: Great Tarts in Art: High Culture & the Oldest Profession
A mixture of art history analysis and scandalous anecdote, this lecture takes a generally light-hearted look at changing attitudes to sexual morality down the ages. This lecture is very much a social history: carefully placing the works of art in their proper historical context, which reveals many little nuances and meanings in well-known works which might not be immediately apparent to the modern eye.

SPEAKER: TERRY PEARSON BA (Hons) MA Dip Ed – NADFAS

Lecture: Myths, Monsters & Misericords
Misericords, the ‘secret’ carvings beneath the seats in the choirs of medieval cathedrals and some major churches, offer a fascinating glimpse into the ways of life and thought of our ancestors. This talk considers some popular old myths about familiar animals as well as the weirder creatures described in the medieval bestiaries and carved on the misericords.

SPEAKER: ELIZABETH GORDON – NADFAS
Elizabeth is both art historian and musician. She has lectured on art and music tours for Serenissima, NADFAS, Martin Randall Travel, and on cruises for Swan Hellenic and Noble Caledonia. Elizabeth’s hobby is singing, and for many years she sang in the Bach Choir. She will be sharing her love and knowledge of Sicily, Assisi, Venice, Vivaldi and Kings College Cambridge. Elizabeth is also the tour leader of the 2009 ADFAS Tour to Venice.

Lecture: Vivaldi & Canaletto
Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741) spent most of his life writing bubbling concertos for a girl’s orphanage in Venice. Antonio Canaletto (1697-1768) was a mere 19 years younger than Vivaldi, and spent his career painting topographical views of his native city for the delectation of the tourists who wished to have a personal record of Venice to take back home. In Elizabeth’s view Vivaldi and Canaletto are pretty good bedfellows!
