Wollongong Symphony Orchestra

THE BATON & BALLET - Wollongong Symphony Orchestra

Featuring music from some of the world’s favourite ballets by Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev and Stravinsky.

Many of us know the music from famous ballets without ever having seen the ballet itself. Some of the world’s most popular classical music has been written for ballet and now has a life of its own. Its strong pulse and rich emotional range engage the listener’s imagination without the visual of the dancers enacting the music.

The WWSO under the baton of principal conductor, Carlos Alvarado, will bring to life some of the most beautiful music ever written for ballet. Music from the father of ballet music as we know it, Pyotr Tchaikovsky, with highlights from Swan Lake could not be overlooked in any program of ballet classics. The grand processional music of Romeo and Juliet by Prokofiev also stands proudly among the ballet favourites.

Stravinsky wrote the Firebird Suite for Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes in 1910. It is fitting then that the WWSO celebrates the centenary of this great work in our 2010 series. It has remained a favourite in the repertoire of ballet companies around the world as well as on the concert program of symphony orchestras. The WWSO will collaborate with artists from other genres in our Firebird.

The featured work of this program will be a tribute to the magic of music from the ballet when it comes under the baton of Maestro Alvarado.

We are pleased to bring this outstanding program to Camden Civic Centre and to continue our offer of $20 tickets for everyone.

FRIDAY, 5TH MARCH

Macarthur Textile Challenge

MACARTHUR TEXTILE CHALLENGE

‘SEEING YOUR WAY, SEEING OUR WAY’
We all have a pattern. A weave. A past. A present.
Many threads of family history have brought us here. Sometimes the thread breaks…
but we all came from the same garden many years ago.
How can our hands bring together our diverse threads and create a pattern for a future together?

The Macarthur Textile Network and Camden Council invite all who live, work, study or
have a connection to the Macarthur area to enter the Macarthur Textile Challenge 2010.

The challenge aims to build a stronger sense of community among the textile arts and the diverse
communities of the Macarthur region by showcasing textile works that respond to the theme.

The work can be 2 or 3 dimensional traditional, contemporary or a
combination of textile forms and must be an interpretation of the theme.

Challenge entries open from 28th October - 23rd April 2010.

Entries will be exhibited from 28 to 30 May 2010 at the Macarthur Textile Expo, Camden Civic Centre.

To register interest please call: 4645 5106

This project is proudly sponsored by the Australian Government Department of Immigration and Citizenship through the Diverse Australia Program. The Diverse Australia Program aims to promote respect, fairness, inclusion and a sense of belonging for everyone. For more information visit www.harmony.gov.au.

Dorothy The Donosaur Show

THE NEW DOROTHY THE DINOSAUR SHOW

Announcing the new Dorothy the Dinosaur Show! The smash hit television show seen in over 21 countries around the world has now been brought to the theatre stage!

Children worldwide have been engaged, enchanted and entertained by Dorothy the Dinosaur, Wags the Dog, Henry the Octopus, Captain Feathersword, Fairy Clare and Fairy Larissa’s adventures and songs.

The show stars Dorothy the Dinosaur, a graduate capital of R.A.D.D (The Royal Academy of Dinosaur Dancing!)  Australia’s favourite dinosaur has performed at New York’s Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, the Apollo Theatre in London and even in Shanghai and now returns to the Australian stage for this brand new show!

The new Dorothy the Dinosaur show has been written by Blue Wiggle, Anthony Field, who also produced the music.

‘My three children adore Dorothy the Dinosaur, so I wanted to put together a concert that reflected the high quality of the TV show that they love’, said Anthony Field.

Children will enjoy meeting old friends and making new ones as they sing, dance, watch, listen and learn.

‘The simple storyline of this theatre show is propelled by some fun and beautiful music and dancing’, added Anthony.

He has recorded the Rosy Orchestra performing songs for Dorothy and her friends to sing along with, such as the delightful Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star! Children will love dancing to Dr Knickerbocker and bouncing up and down to Come On Let’s Jump! Captain Feathersword will be joined by Don the Postman, who sings his signature song. You’ll shake your hips with Wags the Dog and dance a fairy jig with The Fairy Dance.

Along with such hit songs as Romp Bomp A Stomp, To Have A Tea Party and Balla, Balla Bambina, audiences will be ecstatic as the show culminates with Let’s Have A Party!

If you think you’ve seen Dorothy the Dinosaur, then think again! To quote the star of the show, ‘The dancing is delightful and the music is really rosalicious. I know children around Australia will have so much fun when they come to my brand new show!’
